Wreck Diving Paradise - Group departure to Chuuk Lagoon (14 days)
 

Overview

Truk Lagoon has over 60 wrecks, many only recently discovered. Ships, aircraft, battle tanks, vehicles, and a large assortment of World War II armament. Some of them took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor and Midway Island operation. Today Truyk (or Chuuk) is regarded as the ultimate wreck diving destination in the world by most divers.

Day 1 (30/10/17): Departure from Europe² via Doha to Manila
Day 2 (31/10/17): Arrival Manila and on to Guam (night flight)
Day 3 (1/11/17): Arrival Guam and last leg to Chuuk
Day 4-11(2-9/11/17): Diving in Chuuk (3 dives daily)
Day 12 (10/11/17): Diving in Chuuk (2 dives) & Sightseeing
Day 13 (11/11/17): Departure from Chuuk via Guam and Manila to Europe
Day 14 (12/11/17): Arrival Doha and on to Europe²

Itinerary


Truk Lagoon was considered the most formidable of all Japanese strongholds in the Pacific. This reputation caused an overconfident Truk command to relax their vigil against invasion, in spite of U.S. forces fast approaching from the East. Supplies from Japan had almost ceased, due to immense success of U.S. submarines finally equipped with torpedoes finding their mark. Supply convoys receiving nearly 90% losses enroute to Truk, deprived the garrison of needed food, fuel and new armaments desperately required to maintain its supportive strength. By early 1944, the U.S. forces amassed a huge armada of top line carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers and submarines for a major surprise sweep against Truk on February 16th, 17th and 18th. This attack, coded “Operation Hailstone”, caught the Japanese totally unaware, leading to one of the most successful U.S. engagements of WWII.

After a follow up attack in April, 1944, Truk was reduced to rubble with over 70 shipwrecks, 400 aircraft destroyed or sunk, and the menace of this big fortress completely eliminated. The U.S. forces declined direct engagement with the 40,000 troops at Truk, and after these attacks, starvation consumed many of the defenders and native people before a complete Japanese surrender late in 1945.

About 20 years after this conflict, adventure divers such as Jacques Cousteau, Al Giddings and Klaus Lindeman began exploring the sunken wonders of Truk Lagoon’s huge submerged fleet, replete with incredible vistas of war machinery, soft coral draperies, fish life and personal mementos. Truk is without parallel, having its ghostly remains and ensuing aquatic life forming the world’s greatest wreck diving in a wonderfully comfortable location.

Day 1 (30/10/17): Departure from Europe²
Departure from any Qatar Airways European gateway to Doha and to Manila

Day 2 (31/10/17): Arrival Manila and on to Guam
You arrive Manila in the afternoon and have approx a 6 hour wait before continuing to Guam (night flight)

Day 3 (01/11/17): Guam to Chuuk
We are getting closer and arrive Guam very early in the morning and our final leg to Chuuk. After almost 3 days traveling we finally arrive at this legendary island in Micronesia. There are no planned activities this day and just getting ready for our dive marathon the days ahead. Accommodation at Blue Lagoon Dive Resort

Day 4 - 12 (02-09/11/17): Chuuk
Finally our adventure begins and we have 21 dives included in this package. Chuuk and its enormous lagoon is the Holly Grail of wreck diving. Underwater more than 50 ships awaits to be explored during our time on the island. Of course we will just have to focus on some of the most famous once as time is limited (as usual). Some of the wrecks that we intend to dive during our stay will be:

Fujikawa Maru - was built in 1938 by the Mitsubishi Company as a passenger and cargo carrier. The Japanese Navy took possession of her in December 1940 and converted the ship to an aircraft ferry. The conversion included a compliment of six inch guns on her bow and stern. These guns were remnants from the Russo-Japanese War. Just prior to "Operation Hailstone", Fujikawa Maru arrived in Truk and off loaded thirty "Jill" B5N2 bombers onto Eten Airfield. Since these aircraft had been disassembled for shipment, they were unable to help defend Truk and were destroyed on the ground.
The cargo hold still contain Zero fighters. Today the Fujikawa Maru has an abundance of colorful soft coral and large formations of hard corals. It is regarded by many divers as the most popular wreck of Truk Lagoon.

San Francisco Maru - The San Francisco Maru was built in 1919. When World War II began she was taken out of semi-retirement by the Japanese Navy and pressed into service carrying military cargo. One of the San Francisco's most striking features are the three Japanese Type-95 light tanks that still remain on her deck. The Type-95 tank was manned by a crew of three. It possessed 1/2 inch armor. It weighed 7.5 tons and carried one 37 MM main gun and 2-7MM machine guns. It was powered by a six cylinder air cooled diesel engine which could propel the tank up to 30 mph. During "Operation Hailstone", the San Francisco Maru was damaged by dive bombers and photos show her stern on fire before she finally sank. The San Francisco Maru was discovered in 1972. The wreck sits upright. The cargo holds contain sea mines, torpedoes, bombs, artillery, aircraft engines, anti-tank and small arms munitions, and many other artifacts.

Haeian Maru - was built in 1930 as a large passenger cargo liner. Her maiden voyage was from Hong Kong to Seattle. While on a routine voyage in August 1941, she was abruptly recalled to Japan. Upon her return, the Japanese Navy converted the ship for use as a submarine tender. It is the largest ship in Truk Lagoon. The Heian Maru was sunk on the second day of "Operation Hailstone". A torpedo struck her amidships and because of damage already sustained during the earlier raids, the Heian Maru sank quickly. The Heian Maru lies on her port side. The cargo of the Heian Maru contains many of the deadly efficient Japanese Long Lance Torpedoes, as well as submarine periscopes. Many artifacts can be found throughout this wreck.

Gosei Maru - was built in 1937 as a coastal freighter. The Japanese Navy acquired the ship and utilized it as a supply ship for Sixth Fleet submarines. She carried torpedoes and depth charges. In 1976 many of her torpedoes were destroyed to eliminate possibility of detonation. During "Operation Hailstone", Gosei Maru was sunk by a torpedo. She now lies on a slope. The depth ranges from 8 feet at the stern to 100 feet at the bow. The rudder and propeller of the Gosei Maru make for excellent photographic subjects.

Rio de Janeiro Maru - was built in 1931 as a passenger ship. During peace time the Rio De Janeiro was a passenger and cargo vessel traveling around the world. In 1940 the Imperial Japanese Navy converted the ship to a submarine tender providing service to the submarines of the Combined Fleet. After 1943, as the number Japanese submarines had been substantially reduced, the Rio de Janeiro Maru was reclassified as a transport and based in Truk. During the "Operation Hailstone" attack, the Rio de Janeiro Maru was struck with at least one bomb. She was reported on fire and thought to have sunk on the first day. The ship lies on her starboard side. It rests on an incline with the stern deeper than the bow. The propellers, rudder, and large stern gun are excellent photo subjects.

Day 13 (11/11/17): Departure from Chuuk via Guam to Manila and Europe

Departure from Chuuk in the afternoon for a short flight back to Guam (stopover is possible to maybe dive the fantastic caverns ion Saipan and Rota as a possibility). From Guamn we return to Manila and our flight on Qatar Airways via Doha to the UK²

Day 14 (12/11/17): Arrival Europe²
Arriving Doha and continue to your final destination in the Europe²

Best time to dive Chuuk: can be dives all year round but the best conditions are during December to April.

What can you expect to see: Obviously wrecks! Chuuk Lagoon and wreck diving are synonymous. There are many wrecks to choose from and many are easily accessible to recreational divers as they lie in depths of 100-130ft (30-40m). The visibility ranges from 40-100ft (12-30m) so at times, you might have a stunning view of entire wrecks. Having been in the lagoon for more than 60 years, the wrecks are covered in soft and hard coral growth but they are still largely intact. Some wrecks can be penetrated by divers who will discover torpedoes, engine rooms, Zero airplanes, artillery guns and even tanks, trucks and ammunition.Deeper wrecks like the San Francisco Maru are considered to be one of the highlights of Chuuk Lagoon but recreational divers will only be able to see three tanks with guns right on top of the deck which starts at 100ft (30m). Besides wrecks, it is also possible, and in fact recommended, to dive at some of the outer reefs of Chuuk Lagoon. This will be to enjoy superb coral reefs and steep walls which are busy with
